FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT (TOE-IN)
This is the setting of the front wheels so that the distance between the front of the wheels is less than that at the rear, taken in the same plane.

The “toe-in” is given in the “General Data Section”.

To check and adjust
1. Prepare the car but do not mount it on the turntable gauges. See under “Preparation of Car”.

2. Apply a suitable track checking gauge to the front wheels and check the “toe-in”, taking care to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, avoiding any front wheel “run-out” which should be positioned vertically and the bulge of the tyre above Its point of contact with the ground.

3. When the alignment is incorrect slacken off the ball joint lock nuts on the outer ends of the track rods; both are right hand threads.

4. Detach the ball joints from the steering arms by dis-carding the split pins, removing the castellated nuts and withdrawing the tapered ball pins using a suitable extractor.

5. Increase or decrease the “toe-in” by rotating the ball joints, clockwise or anti-clockwise respectively. Both track rods have right hand threads.

6. Retighten track rod locknuts, refit ball joints to steering arms using new split pins.
ACKERMAN ANGLES

Correct Ackerman angles are determined by the angular design of the steering arms and the length of the track rods.

1. Prepare the car but do not mount it on the turntable gauges and check the front wheel alignment (toe-in), see under “Front Wheel Alignment (toe-In) —To check and adjust”.

2. Roll the car onto the turntable gauges and rear wheel ramps, see under “Preparation of the Car”.

3. Check and adjust camber and steering axis inclination angles, see under the respective headings.

4. Set the front wheels in the straight ahead position and set the turntable gauges to zero.

5. Turn the steering to the right until the LEFT HAND WHEEL gauge reads 30 deg. 15’ when the right hand wheel (inner) turntable gauge should read 26 deg. 5’.

6. Turn the steering to the left until the RIGHT HAND WHEEL turntable gauge reads 30 deg.15’ when the left hand wheel (inner) should read 26 deg. 5’.
