FRONT SUSPENSION

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The front suspension is of the coil spring and wishbone type and consists of two independent units each unit employing two unequal length wishbone links. The links adopt a trailing attitude and are located on a pressed steel crossmember at their widest ends by means of long fulcrum pins and bonded rubber bushes.

Provision is made for camber angle adjustment by the Insertion of shims between the upper fulcrum pin and its location on the crossmember turret.

The front edges of the two bottom wishbone links are connected by a single stabiliser bar.

Road shocks are absorbed by a single helical spring which is controlled by a telescopic type shock absorber situated inside the road spring and located with rubber bushes, at the top and bottom ends, Interposed between the crossmember turret and the bottom wishbone link respectively.
ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

The only components requiring lubrication are the front hubs, see Section P for recommended lubricants. The hubs are removed, cleaned and repacked with new grease, the endfloat checked and set within the specified limits as described in subsequent paragraphs.

The shock absorbers are sealed and require no topping up in service but the rubber bushes which form part of the top and bottom mountings should be checked periodically for deterioration.

A periodical check should be made of the rubber dust covers, which should be renewed when found to be damaged.

Check the crossmember, upper and lower fulcrum pin attachment bolts periodically for tightness, the torque figures are specified in the “General Data Section”.
Ensure that the ball sockets are centrally disposed on the ball pins.
