STABILISER BAR

To Remove

1. Raise the car on a ramp.

2. Remove the bolts, nuts and washers securing the four retaining clips to the lower links, noting the position of the two 3/16 in. (4.7 mm.) thick plain washers of the outer clips.

3. Ease the retaining clips from their locating slots in the bottom links to release the stabiliser bar assembly.

To refit
1. Offer up the stabiliser bar into position and check the alignment of the rubber bushes with the slots in the flanges of the bottom links. When correctly aligned, the stabiliser bar should just protrude beyond the two outer bushes.

2. Insert the tongues of the retaining clips into the slots in the flanges of the bottom links.

3. Using a suitable ‘G” clamp, compress the rubber bushes to enable the bolts to be re-inserted through the holes in the clips and bottom links. Finally secure using nuts and washers. It should be noted that the 3/16in. (4.7 mm.) thick plain washers should be fitted at the two outer bolts only, between the clips and the bottom links.

STUB AXLE CARRIER (Fig. 12)

When removing or refitting a stub axle carrier it will be necessary to compress the road spring. A special tool is available for this purpose (see Section S). The use of a jack as an alternative is not recommended.

To remove and refit

1. Apply the handbrake and jack up the front of the car, remove the road wheel on the side from which the axle carrier is to be removed.

2. Remove the front hub assembly, see under “Front Hub—To remove and refit”.

3. Detach the steering arm from the axle carrier by with-drawing two bolts and washers. Remove the brake caliper by withdrawing the bottom attachment bolt and suspend nearby on a piece of malleable wire or stout cord. Remove the brake disc splash guard by withdrawing three bolts and washers.

4. Remove the shock absorber, see under “Shock Absorber — To remove and refit”.

5. Fit the spring compressing tool in place of the shock absorber and compress the road spring. The spring should be compressed until the bottom link is in the horizontal position. This removes the tension on the swivel bearings and allows the removal of the axle carrier~

A spring compressing tool is shown with the suspension unit in the static laden position in Fig. 12.

6. Remove the nuts securing the upper and lower swivel bearings to the axle carrier.

7. Withdraw the axle carrier from the swivel bearings, using a suitable extractor.

8. Refitting is the reverse of the removal sequence but particular attention must be given to the following:

(i) The rear steering arm bolt also attaches the top lug of the brake caliper.

(ii) The swivel bearing huts should be tightened to the torque specified in the “General Data Section”.

(iii) When a new stub axle carrier has been fitted after accident damage, it is advisable to carry out a full steering geometry check.
