7. When the angles of the ‘Inner” wheel are found to be Incorrect both track rods must be reset; see under “Setting Track Rods”. If this does not effect a cure, the steering arms and stub axle carrier must be checked.

SETTING TRACK RODS

To obtain the correct Ackerman Angles, the setting of both track rods is essential.

1. Prepare the car but do not mount It on the turntable gauges, see under “Preparation of Car”.

2. SIacken off the ball joint lock nuts and detach the ball joints from the steering arms by discarding the spilt pins, removing the castellated nuts and withdrawing the tapered ball pins using a suitable extractor.

3. Centralise the steering unit by counting the number of steering wheel turns from lock to lock and then turning the steering wheel back half this amount from the full lock position. THE STEERING UNIT MUST REMAIN IN THIS POSITION THROUGHOUT THE FOLLOWING OPERATIONS.

4. Set both wheels in the straight ahead position and measure the distance from the centre of the tyre treads to the centre of the lower fulcrum pins. ENSURE THESE DISTANCES ARE EQUAL.

5. Adjust both track rod lengths so the two tapered ball pins freely enter their respective steering arms, DO
NOT DISTURB THE POSITION OF THE FRONT WHEELS AND THE STEERING UNIT; fit the castell-ated nuts but not the split pins.

6. Check and adjust the front wheel alignment (toe-In), see under “Front Wheel Alignment (toe-In) — To check and adjust”.

7. Fully tighten both ball joint lock nuts, the castellated nuts and fit new split pins.
REMOVING AND REFITTING
SUSPENSION

1. Detach the bottom end of the lower steering column from the pinion of the steering unit by removing the pinch bolt.

2. Apply the handbrake, jack up the front of the car, remove both front wheels, position stands under the side member of the underframe and support the front suspension crossmember with a wooden beam and trolley jack.

3. Disconnect the two front brake pressure pipes, one from the front bottom connection of the five way connector inside the engine compartment and the second from the flexible hose in the support bracket beneath the right hand front wheel arch by releasing the union nuts and trapping any escaping fluid In a drip tray.

4. Withdraw the four crossmember to underframe bolts, access to these bolts is gained through holes in the underside of the crossmember.

5. Withdraw the front suspension assembly from beneath the car by lowering the jack.

6. Refitting Is the reverse of the removal sequence but particular attention must be given to the following:
(I) The hydraulic system must be bled’ of air, see under “Bleeding the Hydraulic System” In Section K.
(ii) Set the front wheels and the steering wheel in the straight position before attaching the lower steer-ing column to the steering unit.

DISMANTLING AND ASSEMBLING
SUSPENSION

(Complete assembly attached to chassis)

To facilitate the servicing of a single component, the dismantling and reassembling of each Item is fully des-cribed under the appropriate heading. The operational sequence and the dismantling and assembling procedure applies when servicing both sides of the suspension.
