NoteDo not attempt to repair the thermostat. It must be renewed if it is not operating properly.
To remove, test and refit the thermostat
Removal
1. Drain the cooling system to below the level of the coolant outlet housing.
2. Remove the coolant outlet housing retaining bolts and slide the housing with the hose attached to one side.
3. Remove the thermostat and gasket.
Testing
Suspend the thermostat in a vessel of water with a reliable thermometer.
Heat the water slowly, noting the thermometer reading and stirring the water continually.
The thermostat valve should commence to open and be fully open at the temperatures given in the Data Section under "Cooling System ".
Thermostats are sealed and their setting and manufacture is specialised work.
Always renew if doubt exists. If a new replacement is not immediately available, do not fit the existing thermo-stat if proved faulty, as a faulty unit can cause serious overheating.
Refitting
1. Clean the coolant outlet-housing. Coat a new coolant outlet-housing gasket with sealing compound. Position the gasket on the Intake manifold.
NoteThe gasket must be positioned on the intake manifold before the thermostat is installed.
2. Coat the edge of the thermostat with grease for thermostat adhesion. Position the thermostat in the recess of the coolant outlet-housing so that the copper pellet or heat element will be in the intake manifold. Install the thermostat with the word "TOP" toward the top of the engine and the valve end of the thermostat facing outward.
NoteIf the thermostat is improperly positioned, it will cause a retarded flow of coolant.

3. Position the coolant outlet-housing and install the retaining screws.
4. Fill the radiator. Operate the engine and check for coolant leaks and proper coolant level after the engine reaches normal operating. temperature.
RADIATOR
To Remove and Refit
Drain cooling system.
Disconnect top and bottom water hoses.
Remove the fan cowls and the fixing bolts that secure radiator.
Replacement is made In reverse order. Fixing bolts and their nuts should be lubricated with thick oil to prevent rusting of the bolt threads.
Close the drain cock. Fill and bleed the cooling system. Operate the engine and check for leaks at the hose connections.
WATER TEMPERATURE GAUGE
This Instrument. is electrically operated and consists of two units, the temperature element (transmitter) positioned at the rear of the distributor, and the temp-erature gauge in the instrument panel. These units are connected by a single insulated wire in the wiring harness, and temperature is only recorded when the ignition is switched on.
Removal of Element
Drain the radiator enough to allow removal of element without loss of water or anti-freeze.
Disconnect battery at the negative (earth) terminal.
Remove the insulated lead from element terminal.
Unscrew and remove element.
Note-it is most Important that the inter-connecting cable between the gauge and the temperature element is not shorted to earth when the ignition is switched on. If this occurs the temperature gauge winding will burn out and for this reason, the battery must be disconnected or the end of the lead insulated when it is removed from the element terminal.
