5. Remove the rubber packing strip between the steer-ing column and support bracket on the front wheel arch inside the engine compartment by slackening off the nut and bolt.
6. Remove the pinch bolt and nut from the top universal bearing yoke.
7. Withdraw the inner column from the top universal bearing yoke and remove the upper steering column assembly from inside the car.
8. Refitting is the reverse of the removal sequence but particular attention must be given to the following:
(i) The inner column is fed into the top universal bearing yoke so the cut away in the splines coincides with the pinch bolt hole.
(ii) The outer column is positioned so the raised dowel in the outer column is in the twelve oclock position and secured first by tightening the two bolts in the bracket beneath the instrument facia.
(iii) The rubber packing strip between the outer column and bracket on the front wheel arch must not be omitted.
(iv) The front wheels are set in the straight ahead position while the direction indicator switch and steering wheel are fitted.
To dismantle and reassemble (Fig. 2)
1. Withdraw the inner column from the top end of the outer column after detaching the bottom circlip and removing the bottom ball race assembly.
2. Remove the top ball race assembly from the outer column and withdraw the spring from the lower end

of the inner column; the circlip can be removed from the inner column if necessary.
3. Withdraw the splined extension piece from the top of the inner column by extracting the dowel, it is tapped to facilitate removal and then discarded.
4. Withdraw the expander bolt from the bottom end of the splined extension piece after removing the nylon circlip.
5. Reassembly is the reverse of the dismantling sequence but particular attention must be given to the following: -
(i) The tapered end of .the expander bolt and long splines of the splined extension are smeared with Shell SB.2498 grease.
(ii) Ensure the rubber bung is inside the inner Column.
(iii) Ensure that the splined extension piece has com-plete freedom of movement inside the top of the Inner column.
(iv) The expander bolt is fed into the splined exten-sion piece so the dowel in its tapered end locates in two opposite slots of the splined extension piece and retain with the nylon circlip on the threaded end.
(v) The spilned extension piece is fed into the top of the inner column so the groove aligns with the dowel hole, press in a new dowel to such a depth that it does not hinder the movement of the splined extension piece.
