DESCRIPTION
Steering Is effected by an adjustable height steering wheel, an upper and lower steering column assembly, a. rack and pinion type steering unit with two short track rods making the connection between the steering rack and the steering arms mounted on the stub axle carriers.
The upper steering column is mounted in two brackets, one beneath the instrument facia inside the car and the second on the wheel arch inside the engine compartment.
The top end of the inner column is swaged to accommodate the sliding extension for the steering wheel while the bottom end of the Inner column is connected to the pinion of the steering unit by the lower steering column assembly which includes two universal joints.
Mounted on the steering column adjacent to the steering wheel is the direction Indicator switch which is actuated by a striker on the inner column and cancels any direction signals that might have been given as the steering wheel returns to the straight ahead position.
The rack and pinion steering unit is mounted on two brackets welded onto the top front face of the front suspension crossmember. The two track rods operating the steering are attached to the outer ends of the rack by ball joints which are protected by convolute covers while the outer ends are attached to the steering arms by ball joints.
Both track rods are adjustable for the purpose of setting front wheel alignment.

MAINTENANCE
The steering column and unit attachment details must be checked at regular intervals for tightness and the steering unit for oil leakage.
STEERING COLUMN COWLING
Description
The steering column cowling is fabricated in two halves, upper and lower. The upper half is located on the upper column by a raised dowel and secured by a clip and four screws; the lower half is secured to the upper by three screws.
To remove and refit
1. Remove the lower cowling from the upper by with-drawing three screws from the underside of the lower cowling and collect the blanking plug.
2. Remove the upper cowling from the steering column by withdrawing four screws and a clip.
3. RefittIng is the reverse of the removal sequence but particular attention must be given to the following:
(i) The upper cowling is located by a raised dowel in the outer column.
(ii) The spire nut is fitted on to the clip and both offered up to the upper cowling so the spire nut is nearer the steering wheel.
(iii) Check that there Is a gap of 0.050 in. (1 mm) between the top edge of the cowlings and the steering wheel centre when the latter Is In Its lowest position,
