TO SET (Fig. 5)
  1. Remove the steering unit and track rods from the front suspension crossmember and steering arms, see under "Steering unit—To remove and refit".
  2. Clean off all road dirt.
  3. Withdraw the spring from inside the damper housing by removing the two nuts, washers, cover plate, joint washers and shim pack.
  4. When any of the studs are loose or have been renewed, they must be tightened to a torque loading of 40 to 45 lbs. in. (45 to 54 kg. cm.).
  5. Break the oil film between the damper pad and rack by tapping the recessed centre of the damper pad with a mallet and a suitable drift.
  6. Select a shim pack together with two joint washers so the combined thickness will give the appropriate clearance between the end of the damper pad and the cover plate.
  7. Feed the spring Into the centre of the damper pad, locate the shim pack with a joint washer each side followed by the cover plate on the two studs and secure with two washers and nuts, tighten to a torque loading of 35 to 40 lbs. In. (41 to 45 kg. cm).
  8. Check the condition of the two convolute covers and the oil content of the steering unit; fit new covers and refill with oil as necessary, see under" Convolute covers—To remove and refit."
  9. Refit the steering unit and track rods to the front suspension crossmember and steering arms, see under "Steering unit—To remove and refiit".
  10. Check the front wheel alignment, see under "Check-ing front wheel alignment" in Section F


PINION ENDFLOAT

Pinion endfloat is set during Initial assembly of the steer-ing unit and should require no attention until the car has completed a considerable mileage.

To set (Fig. 5)

  1. Remove the steering unit and track rods from the front suspension crossmember and steering arms, see under "Steering unit — To remove and refit".
  2. Clean off all road dirt.
    3. Remove the pinion bearing end cap, joint washers and shim pack from the steering unit by detaching two nuts and washers, exercising care not to remove the special washer on the tail end of the pinion.
    4. When any of the studs are loose or have been renewed, they must be tightened to a torque loading of 40 to 45 lbs. in. (45 to 54kg. cm.).
    5. Refit the pinion bearing end cap but WITHOUT the joint washers and shim pack, break the oil film by tapping the end cap with a hide mallet.
    6. Measure the gap between the flange of the pinion bearing end cap and the body with feeler gauges.
    7. Select a shim pack together with two joint washers so the combined thickness is 0.001 to 0~004 in. (0.02 to 01 mm) THICKER than the measured gap.
    8. Locate the shim pack, with a joint washer each side, followed by the pinion bearing end cap on the two studs and secure with two washers and nuts, tighten to a torque loading of 35 to 40 lbs. In. (41 to 45 kg.cm.).
    9. Check the condition of the two convolute covers and the oil content of the steering unit; fit new covers and refill with oil as necessary, see under "Convolute covers—To remove and refit."
    10. Refit the steering unit and track rods to the front suspension crossmember and steering arms, see under ‘Steering unit —To remove and refit".
    11. Check the front wheel alignment, see under "Check-ing front wheel alignment" In Section F.
