Hard Top Rear Window and Trim Installation (Cont.)

An Article by Stu Brennan

Now comes the tricky part. I needed something to positively retain the clips. After evaluating several options, I settled on the little clips shown at the end. I made them out of 5 mil stainless shim stock, about an inch wide, but 10 mil might have been better. The "Z" piece does the retaining, and the "L" piece holds the clip in place during installation. As shown, the right end of the clip shares the slot in the gasket with the lip of the hard top. The left end of the clip fits behind the trim clip, holding it in place. I glued the Z and L pieces together with a drop of hot melt glue.

Now, back to the installation. Push the gasket out at the center of the top. Bend the tab on the trim clip down just a bit, and confirm that it matches the trim contour. Install the "Z" Clip, then slide the trim clip into it from the side.

Reseat the gasket onto the top, trapping the Z Clip and trim clip as shown. I used a bit of RTV here to, to seal things up. With your assistant pushing on the outside, a popsicle stick can be used on the inside to ease the gasket back over the lip. Repeat on the bottom.
