The front brake pads should be renewed when the friction material has worn down to 1/8 in. (3 mm) thick and must be renewed when the minimum thickness of 1/16 in. (1.6 mm) is reached.
The rear brake shoes must be renewed when the linings have worn down to rivet level.
Front brake adjustment The front brakes require no adjustment and the reducing thickness of the friction material is automatically can celled out by the hydrostatic action of the hydraulic system.
Rear brake adjustment (Fig. 1)
1. Chock the front wheels, release the handbrake and jack up the rear of the car.
2. Rotate the squared head of the brake adjuster, situated in the brake back plate, clockwise until solid resistance is felt.
3. Slacken off the brake adjuster until the rear wheel rotates freely, usually two clicks but when new brake shoes have been fitted, slacken off the adjuster one more click to allow for lining expansion and revert to normal adjustment after a short mileage.
4. Spin the rear wheel and apply the brakes hard to centralise the brake shoes in the drum and recheck the adjustment.
5. Repeat the foregoing operations with the second rear wheel.
6. Apply the handbrake, remove the jacks and front wheel chocks.

Handbrake adjustment
Adjustment of the rear brakes will automatically adjust the handbrake and when the handbrake operation is correct there is four to six clicks of handbrake lever travel before the rear wheels are fully locked.
When, with the rear brakes correctly adjusted, excessive handbrake lever travel is experienced adjust the length of the handbrake cable as follows:-
1. Chock the front wheels, release the handbrake and jack up the rear of the car.
2. Lock both rear wheels by rotating the brake adjusters fully clockwise.
3. Slacken. off the handbrake cable forkend locknut at the wheel cylinder lever. Detach the handbrake cable from the wheel cylinder lever by withdrawing the spring clip from the clevis pin, removing the plain and spring washers and withdrawing the clevis pin from the cable forkend.
4. Set the length of the handbrake cable to remove all slackness by rotating the forkend, clockwise to shorten or anti-clockwise to lengthen the cable.
5. Refit the handbrake cable to the wheel cylinder lever by reversing the removal sequence; position the spring clip towards the rear of the car and tighten the fork- end locknut.
6. Readjust the rear brakes, see under "Rear brake adjustment".
7. Apply the handbrake. remove the jacks and front wheel chocks.
