This should be the end of the story, right?
Nawwww, there's always more... but not for the faint-of-heart.

What happened to the motor? Peter said that at the end of the Mulsanne straight at 5400 r.p.m. the motor just went tick, tick, tick, pop.

Back at Steve Alcala's shop I pull the motor apart and find new meaning to the term "tick, tick, tick, pop". Note the "bluing" on the journal for number three cylinder but not for number seven. Also, look beyond the #3/7 journal to the space the cam typically occupies. Hmmm. Draw your own conclusions.

The motor yielded some unique souvenirs.

A little chewing gum and bailing wire and it will be just fine.

Okay this should be the end of the story, right? Nawwww. There's always more...

This is the motor that was supposed to go with the car to Europe, but missed the "window of opportunity" by a couple days due to some parts problems.

Looking ahead, plans are being made for the Monterey Historics in August, '03. If accepted Peter Procter will come over to drive the Le Mans Tiger at the event.

You've gotta know, it's never over. Right?

Acknowledgments...

This article has been in the works with Steve Laifman almost from the day I returned home from the adventure. One of the things that took the publishing so long in coming was that, as you can see from the various photo credits, I didn't have a lot of photo scrap of my own to work with and needed to rely upon others. Over time photos came in and began to give a picture (pardon the pun) of the events without too many gaps.

Steve deserves all the credit for editing, and re-editing, and re-editing... Each time some pictures would come in I'd E-mail Steve to tell him we would have to re-do an area of the story. To illustrate this I got some photos the other day that would have made a fine contribution to the story. But that's why it's never over, right?

This story could not have been compiled without the photographs, as well as the support and assistance from these enthusiasts and friends:
  • Sharon, my lovely wife, for being who she is.
  • Steven Alcala, for his incredible restoration and caregiving to Nº 9.
  • Bob Cranham, for his new enthusiasm to the Tiger world.
  • Justin Harrington, for that lovely Friday afternoon conversation.
  • Steve Laifman, who said he'd always be there for this project, and was.
  • Gordon Palmer, for getting Nº 9 to and from Europe.
  • Peter Phelps, who cared enough to make the trip from the States.
  • Derek Procter, with his incredible support for his father, Peter.
  • Jim Schrender, for being an STOC enthusiast.
  • Linzi Smart, for knowing what "comfort food" is.
  • Ken Smith, for being my life-long friend who is always there, good times or not.
  • STOC, for organizing this incredible course of events.
  • Carl Soderquist, for being my life-long friend who is always there, good times or not.
  • Erik van der Shaff, for so much enthusiasm and for Race Fotos in the Netherlands.
  • Ian Voller, for being an STOC enthusiast.
  • Dan Walters, for his 20-hour days and meticulous approaches.
  • Sarah Werner, for being my life-long friend who is always there, good times or not.
